Training Your Dog to Stay In Your Hidden Dog Fence
Tuesday, January 27th, 2009 | local info
Pet Fence should never be taken as a replacement for training your dog. In order to make your invisible fence effective in teaching your dog, time and patience is necessary. Aside from that, you need to follow strict rules and guidelines to make the invisible fence system work effectively.
Using the invisible dog fence training to teach your dog about his boundaries can be done on your own or with professional dog training help. You need to consider this closely, since with or without professional trainer, you need to be hands-on with this process especially when the trainer is not around.
In order for your dog to recognize an invisible fence, it will cost you time and patience. However, this task is much easier when you are well-bonded together and the dog listens to your instructions.
This training system could span from 2-6 weeks, depending on how fast your dog can learn.
At the start, small red flags are lined up along where the cables are. If you are using Wireless Dog Fence the flags will be placed along the circular perimeter where the collar starts beeping. The tiny flags will signal the dog where his boundaries are. To prevent shocking your dog at this stage of the training, you must cover the prongs on the collar with a tape.
Then, put on your dog’s leash whenever they go out within the fence boundaries. A warning beep will start off whenever it goes beyond the area, so this will ensure the dog stays within the boundaries. When this happens, pull off the dog right away and praise him if he obeys.
Do this exercise throughout the day so the dog can get accustomed to this setup and will immediately back off when the warning beep is activated.
After the association part of the stage, now you can allow the shock to work by removing the tape around the collar prongs. Although the shock is not painful to the dog, it is enough to get their attention and alert them to turn back.
It is comparable to experiencing a static shock and then you come in contact with any form of metal. You need to make necessary adjustments for the amount of shock your dog will receive, according to its size and level of response.
However, every dog owner must be aware that not all shock collars can be adjusted so make sure to purchase those with adjustable settings. And whenever your dog goes out, check the collar to correct the shock level, just in case it reaches the border.
Make sure not to remove the dog’s leash simultaneous with the removal of the collar prongs’ cover. Keep the leash on your dog whenever he explores the area within the invisible fence.
