Catalytic converters contain platinum

Monday, December 29th, 2008 | local info | No Comments

You don’t need to be a magician to turn base metal into gold: buying relatively cheap metal scrap will actually enable you to transform base stuff into the precious yellow metal called gold!

Some of the most promising industrial scrap is often overlooked by newcomers in the scrap trade, like catalytic converters. These ugly things can be big business, on account of the interesting fact that one of the prominent contents of (scrap) catalytic converters is platinum… one of the more expensive precious metals as you can see on the Kitco precious metals price quotes. This means that the catalytic converters scrap prices are equally interesting, because of their platinum content. In American Scrap Treasures all sorts of scrap metal (and other materials) are featured, among which catalytic converters. The platinum in these ugly contraptions can be recycled and resold, making the clever dealer a nice little profit.

Scrap metal tends to follow the general price developments of metal - this is especially the case with precious metals like gold, silver and indeed platinum. Following the Kitco trends you’ll see that buying scrap enables you to get in at the bottom of price waves and sell at the top, which is a relatively easy way to make a buck or, for that matter, a euro, quid or peso. This trade is fully international, so business is done worldwide.

Not all buyers of precious scrap metals sell the recycled stuff straight away in its pure condition: many (amateur) jewellers use gold, silver and platinum in their creations, and it’s a pleasing idea that some of the platinum that was hidden in your good old catalytic converter, finishes up adorning the slender neck of a beautiful woman! Precious metals look so much better there!

History of Mistletoe

History of Mistletoe

The mistletoe, native to the forests of Northern Europe, is a parasite implant on deciduous and evergreen trees which produces yellowish flowers and waxy white berries. Its closest relative in North America has yellowish flowers and waxy white berries, and is also commonly known as mistletoe. Notably, it is the official floral emblem of the State of Oklahoma.

The name mistletoe came about from two Anglo - Saxon words: mistel which means dung and tan which means twig. And so, mistletoe quite literally means dung on a twig. Mistletoe infers that life can spring up from dung. This leeching plant grows and thrives on the dung of birds on the branches of trees. As a result, mistletoe became the symbol of vivacity and fertility.

The Christmas and New Year tradition of embracing for the bashful and kissing for the brazen under a sprig of mistletoe dates back to olden Britain. Also, it was prevalent among the Druids who were the learned class of the Celts.

The Druids celebrated the beginning of winter ( winter solstice ) by collecting mistletoe and burning it as a sacrifice to their pagan gods. To ensure a year of good faith, peace, and familial harmony, they hung sprigs of mistletoe around their homes. Twigs of the evergreen displayed visibly outside their homes welcomed relatives, friends, neighbors and weary travelers and the mistletoe within encouraged them to embrace shamelessly. Feuding parties or foes who happened to meet under trees that contained mistletoe were required to lay aside their weapons and settle their differences.

The Druids believed that the mistletoe had healing properties. It was often prescribed for female infertility and as an antidote for poisons of all kinds. The gathering of mistletoe was a ceremony by the highest priests using gold knives. Such a carefree rite of harvesting mistletoe is dramatically portrayed in Bellinis opera Norma.

The Celtic Druids were not the only people who ascribed so many marvelous attributes to the mistletoe, the Scandinavians, who called it mistilteinn; also believed that it was the plant of peace, the plant of hope and the plant of harmony. The Scandinavian lore claims that the mistletoe belonged to Frigga, the Scandinavian star of inclination, and the embracing and kissing custom is thought to have come from this notion.

Mistletoe was also used for a decorative green in the Roman Empire during their feasts of Natalis Solis Invicti and Saturnalia. Due to its ties to idolatrous festivities, the Church banned the use of mistletoe when Christmas on December 25 was officially recognized as the birth of Christ in the the fourth century.

As an alternative to the mistletoe, the holly was ironically proposed even thought it too had strong associations with atheist rituals. Nevertheless, the hollys white flowers were to signify the purity of Christ, the acerbic leaves were to symbolize the thorns in Christs crown and the red berries as drops of His blood. Thus, the Holly became a Nativity tradition, but, surprisingly enough, the churchs ban on mistletoe which was in effect throughout the Middle Ages still persists today.

Should you get a puppy

Sunday, December 28th, 2008 | local info | No Comments

Most people enjoy the feel of soft pup fur, sloppy wet licks and warm hugging! Having a puppy is something that could really excite not only because it could entertain you like no other but most of all, it could really make you a big spender. Even if you admit it or not, there is really that inexplicable feeling as if you were being charmed when you tend to bring home a pup that needs you as much as an baby does. It’s an chance to train the dog from an early age to fit your surroundings and lifestyle.

Being gentle and giving the loving kind of care to a pup are some of the things that you can let your children learn. When they grow up, they will tend to go over those sweet and fun memories they had with the puppy when they were still young. But don’t ever get dazzled by all those fun and sweet moments that a pup can give you since there are other things that you should also think about - such as the times that you need to let your pup have that toilet schooling, walk with him on a lead, make him chew his toys instead of your most precious and expensive shoes and other things that a usual puppy does that would either make you give it up or lead you to your madness. Yes, a pup is precious, but also very needy. You’ll spend far more time with that puppy in the early months that you would with a mature dog. More often than not, the shelters would tend to crowd its place with a lot of dogs - and many of which are starting to depart the stage of being a puppy.

Due to the breed or the dog’s history, the choice of which dog is best to bring home to a family with kids will somehow depend to the seller or adoption facility’s proposition as well as which dog is best for adults to have. Without delay, knowing the full size of the dog will be possible and really helpful for you since you will be able to determine whether the dog can fit into your home. You can call on the dog and take him for a walk before making up your mind. There are a lot of puppies that can only be a waste, so, if you don’t want to end up with a trash, be sure to assess the dog first through its parents. You want to know what your pup will grow up to be like when it’s older.

It is more likely that a pup can adjust to your place easily compared to an older dog; but that doesn’t mean the more mature dog won’t love your home, too. The necessary attention and care or time and effort that a puppy would need simply differs to that of a mature dog’s requirements. Training a pup should start from the fundamental principles. Some training might have been given to an older dog, nonetheless, if proper nutrition and care with regards to its health wasn’t given that much attention, you are likely to have extra expenses for its healthcare or for vet bills. Or, it might be an older dog who doesn’t enjoy being around children anymore.

Find a great puppy for sale at DogSearcher.com and other dog classified sites like it, but be sure to consider what has been said in this article about if a puppy is the right fit for you and your family.

The reasons why you want to get a new dog or a dog for the first time may vary, so instead of focusing your time and efforts towards buying a pure blood money that can surely cost you a lot of money, you might as well consider adopting an older shelter dog that needs a warm home and family. But if showing or breeding is your goal, a puppy with papers might suit your needs more. A pup with complete documentation can surely cater to your desires if you want to show it off or breed in the future.~If you plan to show off your dog or have it breed in the long run, then getting a pup with all the applicable records can surely go with whatever you want or need.

Making The Recession Work For Your Business

Sunday, December 28th, 2008 | local info | No Comments

No one is unaware that the world is in the grips of a global recession and with retail sector giants like Woolworths in deep trouble, it is no wonder that most people are concerned. The future prospects are not good for many retail companies as they are in a situation where the banks that were once happy to let businesses borrow money have turned round and said no. This is because retail business banking customers are now considered a high risk, which can cause big issues for small shops as they rely on the banks for their cash flow. This means that many of these organisations have their cash tied up in stock and this means they either have no money until they sell the stock or they have to reduce the amount of stock from suppliers.

A A way to fix the current global financial crisis is to try and persuade consumers to spend more and this is why many businesses are now trying to come up with a business growth plan in order to survive. Many companies are now selling off a lot of their stock at reduced rates so that they can free up some of their funds in order to pay off important bills and to keep their creditors at bay. The issue with this is that most people will now wait until prices have come right down, rather than buying products now when the businesses need it. This means that shoppers tend to only spend money on necessary items and products that they require everyday.

It would seem that consumers are becoming cleverer with their cash. A recent press release said that Manchester restaurants and takeaways were still doing well and that the reason for this was because consumers are still ordering takeaway food but were going for the less expensive option. Rather than using big household names like Dominos they are choosing to go to local Manchester restaurants because these cost around 20% less.

It seems that consumers are still happy to make purchases but they will only spend it on things that they can rationalise, this means that they will spend money on bills, food and health products as well as gifts for certain times of year. Consumers will also still spend money on special occasions such as weddings because these are likely to be once in a lifetime experience and are you going to be the man that denies his daughter the castle wedding she has always dreamed of. People are also prepared to spend money on presents for weddings especially when it comes to jewellery like mens and ladies cufflinks.

My Dad’s Midlife Crisis: Actually Purchasing A Classic Ford Mustang

Sunday, December 28th, 2008 | local info | No Comments

So I have not had any time to post on this weblog half as much as I had expected, owing to the fact that I have been roped into helping my pops fuel his wild & crazy midlife crisis. Well, some would argue it’s not as far out as it could possibly be. Basically how he did it was to go and dress himself up like fonzie, and come on over to my crib and proclaim to me, in his hippest possible vocal tone: “Hop in, bro, we are out looking for some classic Mustangs for sale. You got it, son, I’m going to get myself a real cruiser.”

And so him and me were on our way to a few of those weird vintage car showrooms that I’m always mostly convinced the mob owns and operates, and I watch the dude wrote a check on the spot, for an alarmingly gleaming classic Ford Mustang. It really is one hell of a piece of machinery. It had a great sound as well.

There’s a reason why I put that last sentence in a past tense. It sounded great until it rendered itself silent. The old man informs me that it’s a really easy fix and he just needs to find the right part. Only thing is, it is not as painless to find 1965 Mustang parts as it was like a million years ago, but my pop informs me there is a really big market for them regardless. From what I’m told the best place to find parts for 1969 Mustangs is via online auctions, because you can get them all refurbished and sometimes better than new. They’re not necessarily super-cheap, though… Think about it, they are ancient Mustang parts.

I guess it could’ve been worse… He could’ve decided to buy a toupee.

Unique Ideas For Enjoying Your Vacation In The Snow

Saturday, December 27th, 2008 | local info | No Comments

It doesn’t take very long for the mountains in the U.S. to go from a pleasant green to white as the snow falls getting the resorts ready for a new season of skiing. Unfortunately last year saw some of the worst snowfall in years making it impossible for many people to enjoy a skiing vacation as there was too little snow for the average skier who may be confined to the lower slopes.

Each year hundreds of thousands take to the slopes for the first time but unfortunately some will return home with an injury nor will it be just the first timers as the more experienced will take on new challenges as well. Of course, winter sports insurance packages are available although you will often find that regular travel insurance will cover most skiers or snowboarders if they fall into the novice and intermediate categories.

The reason for this is that although this group will still have accidents, they are more likely to be on normal, well used slopes and not on the slopes favored by more experienced skiers. Problems normally occur when the skier has gained sufficient experience to want to try something a little more challenging and to use slopes that are not patrolled. Insurance providers know where the real skiing and snowboarding dangers lie, and there policies reflect this so many of them will restrict the type of cover they provide in these instances.

Before you decide to go it is essential you check your winter sports insurance policy as there will undoubtedly be conditions which may include cover only when there is a guide or the run is in the resort area. What’s more, the increasing popularity of ‘half pipes’ and ‘free style’ means that the potential risk of injury has increased as more and more people are attracted to this enjoyable leisure pursuit.

Fortunately it is possible for expert skiers to have winter sports insurance that covers some of these more dangerous activities and this need to be taken out if they want to maintain cover for pursuits of this kind. You may find your current travel insurance will cover you for winter sports but this may be limited and will not cover certain activities you may be planning although many companies will allow you to upgrade your travel insurance to include winter sports that do not fall within the policy.

You may find it easier just to source an insurance provider that has organized a ‘bespoke’ winter sports package as this may provide everything you need without the worry of checking every detail of your current travel insurance. These travel insurance policies include cover for loss or damage to skiing equipment whether hired or owned and can even pay out if the resort does not have any snow.

Shopping online for a great buy on a snowmobile then try buying used snowmobiles for sale. There are many companies and websites where you can find quality snowmobiles for sale. The best used snowmobile value would be a snowmobile that was kept in good condition and held its value.

Unfortunately, it is the more experienced skier and snowboarders that require winter sports insurance as they are at greater risk of a serious injury and if they need to be flown from the resort to hospital or home, the costs soon increase. If you still haven’t arranged your insurance cover after reading this article and you do have an accident; you will have plenty of time to ponder about your oversight on the stretcher taking you down the mountain.

Government Help for Your Mortgage

Saturday, December 27th, 2008 | local info | No Comments

A new program was implemented on October 1, 2008. Our President has made a reality the legislation that will let HUD’s Federal Housing Administration (FHA) to continue providing help to homeowners who are having problems paying their mortgages. The Hope for Homeowners program will carry on FHA’s work to help American families who feel they are trapped in mortgages they can’t possibly pay back. Under this new legislation, certain families facing hardship with their mortgage will be eligible to refinance into FHA-insured mortgages they can afford.

Families Could Possibly Be Eligible For This Program

You should not wait if you are currently in a bind. Today you can find out if you qualify for this exciting new program through FHASecure, FHA’s existing refinancing program. They will get your information from these two agencies:

1. You must call a local, HUD-approved housing counseling agency at HUD.gov;
2. You can also call the HOPE NOW Alliance at 1-888-995-HOPE

How Can the US Government Make This Long-Term?

Hope for Homeowners isn’t a hand out. It requires you to prove you have the ability to pay back something long-term. The FHA has had that as a long-standing requirement. FHA only allows families living in that home to be eligible for FHA-insured mortgages. And here are the qualifications for the new loan:

- Their mortgage must have originated on or before January 1, 2008;

- Their mortgage debt-to-income must be at least 31 percent;

- They cannot afford their current loan;

- They did not intentionally miss mortgage payments; and

- They do not own second homes.

Features of FHA-insured loans under the new program include:

- 30-year, fixed rate mortgage;

- Maximum 90 percent loan-to-value ratio;

- No prepayment penalties;

- $550,440 maximum mortgage amount;

- Extinguishment of any subordinate liens; and

- New home appraisals from FHA-approved appraisers.

HUD, Treasury, FDIC and the Federal Reserve will form the Congressionally-mandated Board of Directors and work together to establish additional program standards.

But Your Mortgage Company Can Choose Not to Foreclose

FHA will is asking banks and mortgage companies to come up with an alternative to foreclosing on borrowers. Just like the FHASecure’s recent growth, banks are asked to write-down the outstanding mortgage principal balances to 90 percent of the new value of the property. In many cases, reductions in principle will cost lenders less than the losses associated with foreclosure.

What Happens With This Crazy Financial Market?

This should put the brakes on the foreclosure train, this program will support FHA’s existing effort to stabilize local housing markets. From September 2007 to June 2008, FHA has guaranteed more than $93 billion of mortgage capital.

Where Does the Money Come From?

Well, the FHA will guarantee up to $300 billion in new loans. Families will pay an upfront fee of 3 percent of the original mortgage amount and then an annual premium of 1.5 percent of the outstanding mortgage amount. If there are additional costs, those will be reimbursed by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

Program Timeline

The program will last from October 1, 2008 through September 30, 2011. Since September 2007, FHASecure has helped more than 290,000 families obtain safer, more affordable mortgages. FHASecure is on pace to help 500,000 families by the end of the year.

Thoughts for New Watercolorists

Friday, December 26th, 2008 | local info | No Comments

Beginning to paint watercolor may be odd and trying at first, more so if one is accustomed to more opaque mediums. Since watercolor is transparent you must decide from the very beginning where the areas of white will be in your painting. I’ve gotten a lot of information from reading on the Arts and Music In Depth Blog. If anyone is new at this like me, a good (maybe the best) overview I’ve seen is at http://www.johnlovett.com/beginer.htm.

For me, one of the best tips given is:

“Your drawing will look better if the most interesting part ( called the centre of interest ) is not placed along either of the pages centre lines. The strongest tonal ( light / dark ) contrast should be placed at the centre of interest. Have some areas of the drawing less detailed than others. Try and keep most of the detail in the area of the centre of interest.

“To gain confidence, practice drawing on large sheets of cheap paper with a soft (5B or 6B) pencil, charcoal, or pastel pencil. Stand up, work on a vertical surface (or surface at right angles to your line of vision) and move your arm from the shoulder. Work from large and bold to fine and detailed. Only the final finishing off needs to be done with small, tight hand movements.”

I’m afraid my talent is quite lacking, but I’m going to give it my best! They say that practice makes perfect, and I believe that is true. But free time for practice is an essential element that I have very little of. Perhaps I need to enroll in a course in ‘time management’. If only I had time to take the course! Of course I’ll keep watching the Arts and Music In Depth Blog for any other info I can use.

There is one question that I can’t seem to find the answer to - can I use oil and/or acrylic brushes to do watercolors? I know that brushes are packaged for different uses. However, it seems to me that for all practical purposes one could use those other brushes for watercolors. But perhaps I am missing something something, so I’ll keep searching for a definitive answer. Wish me luck!

Search for hair loss remedies.

Friday, December 26th, 2008 | local info | No Comments

Anxiety and stress can be negative effects of hair loss. We are judged by our appearance which includes our hair. Hair loss, therefore, can have an enormous impact on self-perception, self-esteem, and social life. Numerous remedies are on the market for hair loss but no cure exists.

Living with your hair loss remedy is a simple way. Just like acne (Clearpores), this is a common normal process of aging. Talking to a counselor may help you cope with any self-esteem issues you may face as the result of hair loss.

Many people that suffer from hair loss find that one good remedy can be found in hair styling and cosmetic techniques. Hair coloring, waves, and haircuts alone can make a big difference in the way you look and feel, making hair loss much less apparent.

A hair loss remedy approved by the FDA and used by many is Provillus which treats pattern hair loss in both males and females. Though not always effective in promoting new hair growth, if used regularly, Provillus can be effective in slowing or even stopping hair loss.

If you’re looking for a remedy for hair loss, you may want to check into hair attachments. When wanting their hair to look fuller, people may choose attachments consisting of human hair and synthetic fibers.

Utilizing existing hair, skin or surgical grafting, they are kept in place.

Lastly, a hair loss remedy that can be effective but costly is hair transplant or replacement surgery. With constantly improving procedures and results, this simple surgical procedure distributes healthy follicles evenly over areas of the scalp that are affected by baldness.

Note: Please consult a doctor before taking any medical advice.
